FORT MYERS, Fla. – As the spring season winds down, the FGCU women’s golf team is gearing up for the 2013 Atlantic Sun Championship. Making their fifth trip to the conference event, the Eagles will have their sights set on the program’s first-ever championship as play opens on Monday morning at the Jekyll Island Golf Club in Jekyll Island, Ga.

“This tournament is what we have been working towards all year long with our countless hours of practice and hard work in the gym,” said head coach Sarah Trew.  “We have had a few weeks now to rest and fine tune our game, so I think that will play to our advantage. We have been talking a lot about playing more relaxed and letting the scores come to us rather than trying to force the issue. I believe if we do this and are confident that we have prepared to the best of our ability, then we will be successful.”

The 10-team field includes top-seeded ETSU, No. 2 Mercer, No. 3 Kennesaw State, No. 4 Stetson, No. 5 FGCU, No. 6 Jacksonville, No. 7 North Florida, No. 8 Lipscomb, No. 9 USC Upstate and No. 10 Northern Kentucky.

The Green and Blue competed in last seasons A-Sun Championship and finished in 7th out of 9 teams. Then-freshman Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) led the Eagles with a tie for 14th place, individually. The Eagles have finished as high as in a tie for third place back in 2011 and have had three top-five finishes in the A-Sun Championship.

FGCU last competed at the UC Spring Invitational which saw the Eagles place in a tie for 7th out of 17 teams. The UC Spring Invitational capped off an 8-day period which saw the Green and Blue play in two separate tournaments during the week. FGCU started the week off with a 7th place finish at the Ocala Spring Invitational before heading to UC Spring Invitational three days later.

The Eagles have finished within the top-10 in four of five tournaments during the 2013 spring season, highlighted by a sixth place finish at the Le Triomphe Collegiate Invitational back in February. The Green and Blue have finished within the top seven in three of the five tournaments this year.

The 2013 A-Sun Championship will be played on the Pines Lake course at the Jekyll Island Golf Club. Layout is a 5,810-yards, par-72 configuration. All three days will begin with tee times at 8:00 a.m. with FGCU teeing off at roughly 9:30 a.m.

The Green and Blue will sport the five-person lineup of redshirt junior Briana Carlson (Inverness Fla./Citrus HS), sophomore Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS), Guoynes, redshirt freshman Kristin Swindell (Bradenton, Fla./Braden River HS) and freshmen Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy HS).

Live scoring will be available each day and a link will be provided by going on the women’s golf schedule page. Results and recaps will also be provided after each day on www.FGCUATHLETICS.com.
