JEYKLL ISLAND, Ga. – After a third round team score of 298 at the 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship, the FGCU women’s golf team finished third on the 10-team leaderboard, on Wednesday morning at the Jekyll Island Golf Club in Jekyll Island, Ga.

The third place finish ties the highest ever finish in program history at FGCU as well as the highest finish during the spring 2013 season. The Green and Blue finished tied for third in the spring of 2011.

The Eagles positioned themselves in second place going into the final around, after shooting a program-record team score of 291 on Tuesday. The Green and Blue faltered in the final round, carding a final round score of 298, leaving the door open for Kennesaw State, who shot a final round score of 292 to jump over FGCU by one stroke. ETSU won the three-day tournament with a total team score of 880 (287-291-302). Kennesaw State (886), FGCU (887), Mercer (893) and Stetson (905) rounded out the top five spots with ETSU.

Redshirt freshman Kristin Swindell (Bradenton, Fla./Braden River HS) led FGCU, carding a 1-under par 71 to finish with a final score of 216 (73-72-71), good enough for a share of fourth place. Redshirt junior Briana Carlson (Inverness Fla./Citrus HS) also finished in the top 10, in ninth place, with a total score of 219 (76-70-73). Swindell was named to the All Tournament team for her performance.

After leading the team through the first two rounds, sophomore Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) stumbled on the final day, carding a 6-over par 80 to finish in 11th place overall, with a total score of 222 (71-73-78)

Freshmen Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy HS) and sophomore Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) rounded out the five-player squad for FGCU. Detlefsen finished tied for 18th with a total score of 230 (78-76-76) followed by Guoynes in a tie for 36th with a three round score of 235 (79-78-78).

With the season now complete, the Eagles head into the offseason to prepare for the 2013-14 season. The Green and Blue finished the 2013 spring season with five top-10 finishes.
