FORT MYERS, Fla. - Emma Smyser, a product of Naples who spent the 2012-13 season at the University of Florida, will join the FGCU women’s golf team as a transfer, head coach Sarah Trew announced Friday.

Smyser – who will be a sophomore – competed in one tournament as a freshman at UF last year, shooting rounds of 82-75 to finish in 25th place at the Florida Challenge. As an amateur, she was a 2013 Women’s Southern Amateur First Flight Champion and also reached the match-play portion of the Women’s Western Amateur.

“I am very excited to have Emma join the Eagle family,” said Trew. “She is a tremendous competitor and a joy to be around as a person; there is no doubt in my mind that she is going to be a positive addition to our roster.  Emma has experienced collegiate golf in what I consider to be one of the toughest conferences in our sport, and will bring a tireless work ethic with her. Emma will be a great fit for our program.”

Smyser’s family moved to Naples when she was 9, and throughout her high school career the Indiana native was a three-time Naples Daily News Golfer of the Year. Smyser was also a four-time all-conference selection while at Gulf Coast High School and played in four straight Florida state championships. In three of those appearances she finished in the top-10, including a second-place showing as a junior after shooting rounds of 73-71.

Additionally, as a junior golfer, Smyser had four top-10 finishes on the American Junior Golf Association, including two top-5s.

Smyser joins seven returning members of the FGCU women’s golf team, which had five student-athletes named Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Division I All-American Scholars last year. Trew enters her third season at the helm of the Green and Blue, who finished last season third at the Atlantic Sun Championship.
