@FGCU_WGOLF Begins Tournament Season at FSU Match Up
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The FGCU women’s golf team will begin the tournament schedule of the 2014 spring slate as the team travels to the Second Annual Florida State Women’s Golf Match-Up Tournament this weekend. The tournament will take place at Southwood Golf Club and is hosted by Florida State University. To start off the spring season, this three-day, 54 hole tournament will feature individual and team components, with FGCU being teamed with Mercer during team competition.
The teams will tee off at 8:30 a.m. all three days for 18 holes each day. The Southwood course features a par-72, 7,172 yard course.
The unique event will feature 12 teams that will compete together in certain rounds. The teams will tee-off in twosomes during the first two rounds of play, and then play in threesomes in the final round. The twosomes will consist of partners playing together and the matches are as follows: Florida State/Texas A&M, Notre Dame/South Carolina, Furman/Kansas, Florida Gulf Coast/Mercer and Kansas State/Mississippi State.
“We are extremely fortunate to be able to begin our spring tournament state with an event like the FSU Match-Up. The field is one of the strongest we have ever seen and we have the opportunity to see how we stack up against a bunch of Top-50 teams,” said head coach Sarah Trew. “The team event format has a little bit of a twist thrown in there, out of the 10 scores possible, we will have to count the low four and the highest one.”
“Many times, if players are struggling they will count on throwing their score out and relying upon their teammates. The Match-Up will make every team fight for every shot because you can’t just drop a score if someone is having a bad day. We have a tremendous opportunity this week and I can’t wait to get started.”
The Eagles will utilize a lineup of Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus High School, Georgia Price (Bude, England/Fort Myers High School), Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane), Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) and Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy).
Last year in the inaugural tournament, the University of Georgia took the championship and partnered with Oklahoma to win the match-up championship.
