Women's Golf Ties for 3rd at Springlake Intercollegiate

SEBRING, Fla. – After shooting the second lowest final round score, the Florida Gulf Coast University women’s golf team finished tied for third at the 2005 NIU Springlake Intercollegiate hosted by Northern Illinois University at the Springlake Golf Resort. High Point University shot 311-305-616 to claim a seven-stroke win over Creighton University (315-308) in the 36-hole event. FGCU shot a 304 over the final 18 holes to tie Mercer University for third with a team score of 625. Only Ferris State, who shot a 303 on the second day, posted a better round in the tournament. Creighton’s Leigh Sutton claimed medalist honors with a two-round score of 146 to finish one shot better than Ashley Davis of Old Dominion. Sutton carded a final round 72 to pull out the win. FGCU had three golfers finish in the top 20, led once again by freshman Heather Hagerman (New Port Richey, Fla.). Hagerman continued her steady play with a 153 (76-77) to finish in a tie for sixth overall, just seven strokes behind Sutton. Junior Brittany Bertilson (Austin, Minn.) tied for 12th after recording a 155 (86-69). Her final round score of 69 set both a FGCU record low 18-hole round and set a new NIU Springlake Intercollegiate mark as well. Freshman NatalieLueck (Beaver Falls, Penn.) had a two-round score of 156 (79-77) to finish in a tie for 19th. Freshman Hallie Schweitzer (Flower Mound, Tex.) tied for 46th with a 161 (80-81). FGCU returns to action March 21-22 at the 3rd Annual Lady Herd El Diablo Invitational in Citrus Springs, Florida. The 54-hole event will be held at the El Diablo Golf and Country Club.
