Eagles Clinch Second At Home Tournament
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s golf team clinched second at their home tournament at Miromar Golf Club in Estero. Against regional competition, the Eagles posted a .500 record, with a two-day overall total of 629.
On Saturday the Eagles finished second with a 319 team total to Florida Southern’s 301. After the second round on Sunday the women improved to a 310 finish, but it still wasn’t enough as Florida Southern came through to win the title with a 601 finish.
“They were pretty disappointed that this was one of their home courses and they didn’t play very well the first round,” FGCU coach Holly Vaughn said of her players. “They got here in a different gear this morning and played a little better.”
The Eagles were just out of placing in individuals, but clinched fourth, fifth and sixth place respectively. Sophomore Heather Hagerman (New Port Richey, Fla.) rebounded from a first-round 80 to shoot a 2-over-par 74 and led FGCU at 154 to finish fourth. Senior Brittany Bertilson (Austin, Minn.) finished in fifth place with a 157 total and sophomores Natalie Lueck (Beaver Falls, Penn.) finished sixth with a 158 total and Hallie Schweitzer (Flower Mound, Texas) came in 13th with a 165. Freshman Cassie Sherron (Cape Coral, Fla.) posted a 173 total at 15th place.
Florida Southern’s Lindsey Bergeon took medalist honors with a 144 total and Heather Burgner took second place with a 149.
