Eagles Have Strong Showing in First Round at Eagle Landing

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The opening round of the 2010 JMU-Eagle Landing Invitational got underway on Sunday at the Eagle Landing Golf Course at Oakleaf Plantation in Jacksonville, Fla. In the field of 17, the Eagles sit in a tie for fourth place on the team leaderboard and four participants are in the top 25 individually at the three-day, three-round event.

As a team, FGCU submitted a single round 305 placing them in a two-way tie for fourth with fellow A-Sun Conference member Stetson. The Eagles sit ahead of the Big Ten’s Illinois (308), the A-Sun’s Jacksonville (312), the Big 12’s Kansas State (313) and Elon University (315) to round out the top 10. Aggregate scores of 316 put No. 33 Chattanooga and, tournament host, James Madison in a tie for 11th, while Georgetown (319), Yale (326), and Iowa (330) sit 14th, 15th, and 17th respectively. Central Arkansas (299) leads the field, while USF (303) and Kennesaw State (304) are the only other schools to top the Blue and Green in the opening round.

On the individual leaderboard, four FGCU golfers have played well enough to be in the top 25 overall. Freshman Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla.) turned in the best opening-round score for the Eagles, currently in a three-way tie for 10th overall with a 75. Senior Jessica Paulmann (Sarasota, Fla.) is in an eight-way tie for 13th overall with a one-round 76, while junior Lina Elmsater (Solna, Sweden) and senior Amber Pedersen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) are in an 11-way tie for 21st with a single-round 77. Hailey Koschmann from the University of Illinois leads the field of 93 individuals with a one-round 69.

The 2010 JMU-Eagle Landing Invitational picks back up on Monday morning with another single round of competition. The three-round event concludes on Tuesday afternoon with the final round of play.
