Women's Golf Places Fourth at 2010 UC Women's Spring Invite

CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. – The FGCU women’s golf team finished their third tournament of the spring season with a fourth place finish at the 2010 UC Women’s Spring Invitational in Crystal River, Fla. on Saturday afternoon. Briana Carlson, Amber Pedersen, and Jessica Paulmann each placed in the top 25 individually.

“I am very proud of the way the ladies played and finished the tournament,” said head coach Brittany Bertilson. “ They have been working very hard on their short game and it’s really starting to make a difference.”

The Blue and Green were in sole possession of fifth place heading into Saturday’s final round after posting a two-round 619 on Friday. On the final day, the Eagles combined for a 923 (311-308-304) to move into fourth place in the field of 18, ahead of FAU (924), Memphis (925), Cincinnati (938), Rutgers (939), Jacksonville (942), Ohio University (974), and Dartmouth (989). Illinois won the 2010 team title with an aggregate score of 893 (299-293-301).

On the individual leaderboard, FGCU had three participants place in the top 25 overall. Carlson (Inverness, Fla.) set the tone for the Eagles with a 225 (76-73-76), tying with Memphis’ Marissa Steen for fifth place. Seniors Pedersen (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Paulmann (Sarasota, Fla.) also made it in the top 25. Pedersen turned in a score of 231 (78-77-76) for 18th place, while Paulmann finished in a three-way tie for 25th with a 233 (79-78-76). Alex Buelow of Stetson earned the 2010 individual title with a tournament-low score of 216 (72-69-75).

The Eagles will hit the fairways again on Monday, April 5th for the Canes and Cardinal Classic at Don Shula’s Golf Resort in Miami Lakes, Fla. This will be the final competition of the spring for the FGCU women’s golf team, before traveling to DeLand, Fla. for the A-Sun Championships on Monday, April 12th.
