FORT MYERS, Fla. – Hitting the road to open the 2010 fall season on Sunday, the FGCU women’s golf team will head to Glencoe, Ala. to compete in the 15th annual Chris Banister Golf Classic at the Silver Lakes Golf Course, hosted by the Jacksonville State University.
“This will be a great tournament to start the season and a chance to see where we are competitively,” said first-year head coach Meghan Spero. “I feel that the team has certainly played well throughout the preseason. This should be a good confidence builder and we’re looking forward to a successful weekend.”
The 54-hole event will be played on the 5,943-yard, par-72 layout and will feature seven teams, with the Eagles teeing off against Samford, Lamar, Mercer, Evansville, Butler and host Jacksonville State. The tournament will begin on Saturday with practice rounds, while competition will get underway with an 8 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday. The second round will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, while the final round will get underway on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m.
Edging out host JSU by five strokes in the 2009 Chris Banister Classic, Lamar will look to defend their team title in this year’s event.
Sunday will mark the second time that FGCU has competed in the annual tournament. In 2008, the Blue and Green finished in eighth place with a three-round score of 950 (315-315-320).
Five student-athletes on the seven-player roster will travel to the weekend event. Named to the All-Atlantic Sun Conference second team and a unanimous selection to the All-Freshman team last season, sophomore Brianna Carlson will once again lead the way for the Eagles. Seniors Lina Elmsater and Katerina Toomalatai along with newcomers, junior Fabienne Haremza and freshman Megan VanEtten, round out the Blue and Green competitors taking to the course.
