DELAND, Fla. – In its final tournament of the fall season, the FGCU women’s golf team headed to the clubhouse in sixth place following Tuesday’s final round of play at the two-day Stetson Invitational at the Victoria Hills Golf Club in DeLand, Fla.
“Although the results of this tournament aren’t where we’d like them to be, I feel that we have a good understanding of where our strengths and weaknesses lie,” said first-year head coach Meghan Spero. “Heading into the spring we will work on bringing our weaknesses up to par and building upon our confidence as a team.”
The Eagles’ five-member squad started the event with an opening round 318 and came back with a six-stroke improvement in round two for a day one total of 630 (318-312). Already in sixth place heading into the final day, the Eagles maintained their position at tournament’s end with a closing round 315 for a final tally of 945.
With totals of 893, Daytona State (307-286-300) and tournament host Stetson (300-299-294) topped the nine-team field to claim a share of the team title.
Leading the Blue and Green on the leaderboard, sophomore Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) finished in a two-way tie for ninth overall in the 45-player field, carding a final round 78 for a total of 227 (75-74-78).
Firing the best round of the day for the Eagles with a 77, junior Fabienne Haremza (Wildermen, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) moved into 22nd on the leaderboard with a score of 235 (79-79-77), while freshman Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell) shot an 80 to wrap up the event with a 240 (81-79-80), good for 25th overall. Matching Van Etten’s score on the day, senior Katerina Toomalatai (Palm Coast, Fla./Flagler Palm Coast HS) also added to FGCU’s tournament total, handing in a three-round 243 (83-80-80) to tie for 26th with two other individuals.
Daytona State’s Mitsuki Katahira earned medalist honors with a 207 (72-68-67).
With the fall season now behind them, the FGCU women’s golf will take time to prepare for the 2011 spring season. The Eagles first spring tournament is set for February 6-8 as they take part in the Jacksonville Classic in Jacksonville, Fla.
