Women's Golf Finishes Round One in Fourth Place at JU Classic

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The FGCU women’s golf team opened the 2011 spring season with a trip to Jacksonville, Fla. for the JU Classic at the Hidden Hills Country Club. Following Sunday’s opening round of play, the Eagles sit in fourth place with sophomore Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) tied for a share of 10th place on the individual leaderboard.

The Blue and Green combined for a day one total of 313, sitting two strokes better than Mercer and ahead of USC Upstate which holds sixth place with a 337.

Tournament host Jacksonville leads the seven-team field into the second day with a 298, while Miami and defending champion Daytona State sit ahead of FGCU with a 299 and 310, respectively.

On the 40-player scoreboard, Carlson leads the way for the Eagles with an opening round 76, good for a two-way split for 10th overall. Junior Fabienne Haremza (Wildermen, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) and freshman Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) are just one stroke behind Carlson, each carding a 77 and claiming a share of 12th on the board.

Jacksonville’s Kristin Boettcher and Miami’s Maria Ronderos sit atop the leaderboard following day one 72’s.

The second round will unfold at 9 a.m. on Monday morning followed by an 8:30 a.m. split tee start for Tuesday’s final round. Round-by-round results from the 2011 JU Classic will be available at www.FGCUAthletics.com following each day’s competition.
