JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – At the rain-shortened 36-hole 2011 JU Classic, the FGCU women’s golf team wrapped up Tuesday’s final round in fourth place in the seven-team field at the Hidden Hills Country Club. Sophomore Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) paced the Eagles with a second place finish on the individual leaderboard.
The Blue and Green held fourth place with a 313 following Sunday’s opening round. Due to rain in the area on Monday, the tournament was shortened to 36-holes set to resume on Tuesday. The Eagles retained their fourth place spot on the leaderboard at tournament’s end, carding a 323 for a two-day total of 636.
Defending champion Daytona State (310-303/613) rallied for a seven-stroke tournament victory over Miami (299-321) and A-Sun foe Jacksonville (298-322), who finished in split for second place scoring a 620.
After completing the opening round in a share of 10th, Carlson rebounded with a three-over 75 on the final day to jump into sole possession of second place on the 40-player board with a 151 (76-75). Finishing with a total of five birdies, Carlson also ranked among the best in par 5 scoring at even-par.
Daytona State’s Mitsuki Katahira tied the tournament record with a three-under par final round to successfully defend her title with a 143 (74-69).
FGCU also had a strong showing from junior Fabienne Haremza (Wilderman, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) and freshman Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) who each finished in a tie for 13th with a 77-81/158. With two-round totals of 170, seniors Lina Elmsater (Stockholm, Sweden/Pfeiffer University) and Katerina Toomalatai (Palm Coast, Fla./Flagler Palm Coast HS) shared the 27th spot with scores of 84-86 and 83-87, respectively.
The Eagles will now prepare for next month’s James Madison Invitational which will take place in Jacksonville, Fla. beginning March 10. Round-by-round results will be available at www.FGCUAthletics.com at the conclusion of each day.
