Carlson in Front at JMU Invite; Eagles in Tie for Fourth

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Returning to competition for the first time in a month, the FGCU women’s golf team opened play at the James Madison/Eagle Landing Invitational on Friday morning at Eagle Landing Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla. Following round one, sophomore Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) sits atop the individual leaderboard after a 2-under par 70, and the Eagles headed to the clubhouse in a two-way tie for fourth place.

Among the 98 individuals participating, Carlson reached par or better 15 times on the day with five birdies, including back-to-back birdies on the par-4, 8th and 9th to close out the round.

Taking the course in the field of 18, the Blue and Green fired an opening round 305 to put them in a share of fourth place with Maryland. No. 34 Chattanooga leads the tournament heading into day two with a 296, while Stetson (303) and East Carolina (304) sit just ahead of the Eagles in second and third, respectively.

Also playing well for the Eagles, junior Fabienne Haremza (Wildermen, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) is in tie for 13th after scoring a 3-over 75, and freshman Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) and senior Katerina Toomalatai (Palm Coast, Fla./Flagler Palm Coast HS) also contributed to the Blue and Green score, submitting scores of 80 in round one.

FGCU returns to the course for Saturday’s round two and the final round is set to unfold on Sunday morning, both beginning at 8 a.m. Results and recaps from both rounds will be available at following each day.
