JMU Invitational Concludes for Women's Golf
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The FGCU women’s golf team finished the final round of the James Madison/Eagle Landing Invitational on Sunday at Eagle Landing Country Club in Jacksonville, Fla. The Eagles finished in a tie for 11th in the 18-team field and sophomore Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) led the five-member team, placing fourth individually.
FGCU held a share of fourth place after Friday’s opening round 304 and dropped into a tie for 15th following Saturday’s second round 317. The Blue and Green came back with their best round of the tournament, 298, on Sunday, moving their final score to 920 (304-327-298) and finishing in two-way tie for 11th with host JMU.
No. 34 Chattanooga led the field through all three rounds and was awarded the team title with a tournament record 859 (296-285-278). Chattanooga's final-round 278 was a team single-round tournament record.
Finishing fourth in the 98-player field, Carlson carded two sub-par rounds over the three days and held a final tournament score of 217 (70(-2)-76-71(-1)). The Inverness, Fla. native opened with a two-under par 70 on Friday and also handed in a one-under par 71 in the final round en route to her second top five finish in as many tournaments this spring.
The four other members of the Eagles’ squad scored their best rounds of the event on the final day. Contributing to the final FGCU tally, junior Fabienne Haremza (Wildermen, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) shot a two-over par 74 for a three-round total of 230 (75-81-74), and freshman Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) finished with a 234 (80-78-76) after submitting a 76 in the final round. Senior Lina Elmsater’s (Stockholm, Sweden/Pfeiffer University) 79 also added to the Eagles’ final score at the event.
Chattanooga’s Christine Wolf finished with a tournament record score of 209, as she took the individual title.
FGCU will be back in action when it heads to Crystal River, Fla. to take part in the Cincinnati Spring Invitational. The tournament will commence on Friday, March 25 at Plantation Golf Resort. The three-day event will conclude on Sunday, March 27. Results from the tournament will be available at www.FGCUAthletics.com at the conclusion of each round.
