FORT MYERS, Fla. – For the second time this spring season, sophomore Briana Carlson’s (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) play on the golf course earned her Atlantic Sun Conference Golfer of the Week honors, announced by the league office on Wednesday. In her most recent outing, Carlson placed fourth on the 98-player leaderboard at last weekend’s James Madison/Eagle Landing Invitational.
Finishing fourth overall, Carlson carded two sub-par rounds over the three days and held a final tournament score of 217 (70(-2)-76-71(-1)). The Inverness, Fla. native opened with a two-under par 70 on Friday and also handed in a one-under par 71 in the final round en route to her second top five finish in as many tournaments this spring.
As a team at the JMU Invite, FGCU held a share of fourth place after Friday’s opening round 304 and dropped into a tie for 15th following Saturday’s second round 317. The Blue and Green came back with their best round of the tournament, 298, on Sunday, moving their final score to 920 (304-327-298) and finishing in two-way tie for 11th with host JMU.
Opening the spring season at the rain-shortened 36-hole 2011 JU Classic, Carlson helped the Eagles to a fourth place finish after wrapping up the competition in sole possession of second place on the 40-player board with a 151 (76-75) en route to the A-Sun’s first Golfer of the Week Award of the season.
FGCU will be back in action when it heads to Crystal River, Fla. to take part in the Cincinnati Spring Invitational. The tournament will commence on Friday, March 25 at Plantation Golf Resort. The three-day event will conclude on Sunday, March 27. Results from the tournament will be available at www.FGCUAthletics.com at the conclusion of each round.
