FORT MYERS, Fla. – Traveling to the 2011 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship at the Victoria Hills Golf Club in DeLand, Fla., the FGCU women’s golf team will open the competition with a 9:20 a.m. tee time on Monday morning.
Paired with Mercer and two-time defending champion Stetson, the Blue and Green squad will include seniors Lina Elmsater (Stockholm, Sweden/Pfeiffer University) and Katerina Toomalatai (Palm Coast, Fla./Flagler Palm Coast HS), junior Fabienne Haremza (Wildermen, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University), sophomore Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) and freshman Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS).
In GOLF.com's first ever ranking of the best golf courses in Florida, Victoria Hills ranked No. 10 overall. The course has previously hosted the A-Sun Championship in 2005, won by Georgia State, and 2009, won by Stetson.
At last year’s A-Sun Championship at the Venetian Bay Golf Club in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., the Blue and Green led the field of 10 after setting a first-round scoring record with a 6-over par 294, breaking Campbell’s mark of 296 set in 2007. The Eagles fired consecutive rounds of 298 over the final two days, moving the five-member team total to 890 (294-298-298) and placing them fifth overall.
On the individual leaderboard, Carlson submitted the top score for FGCU with a 218 (72-73-73), good for third place. Toomalatai recorded a three-day total of 229 (72-79-78) putting her in a tie for 24th and Elmsater took 27th with a score of 230 (82-73-75).
The 2011 A-Sun Championship is set to play one round each day from Monday to Wednesday. Round-by-round results and recaps will be available at www.FGCUAthletics.com following each day.
