Monday, October 10, 2011

BRADENTON, Fla. – With two rounds complete at the USF-Waterlefe Invitational in Bradenton, Fla., the FGCU women’s golf team sits in fourth place on the nine-team leaderboard. Senior Fabienne Haremza (Wildermen, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) leads the Eagles into the final round, sitting in a two-way tie for fifth overall.

“We really struggled out there in the first round today,” said first-year head coach Sarah Trew. “Collectively we made some mistakes with our course management. The second round we were able to rebound and learn from our errors. I am proud of the way we hung in there and cut 15 shots off our first round total. We have put ourselves in a decent position and are looking to climb up the leaderboard tomorrow.”

The Green and Blue opened the competition with a score of 319 and followed with a 15-stroke improvement in round two, to bring their day one total to 319-304/623. FGCU sits in sole possession of fourth place, trailing host USF (305-294/599), Houston Baptist (305-303/608) and Southern Mississippi (303-306/609), which top the leaderboard in respective order.

Haremza paced the Eagles with an opening round 77 and continued with 73, bringing her day one total to 150 and placing her in a share of fifth place on the 47-player leaderboard.

Also appearing in the top 20 for the Green and Blue were freshmen Kristin Swindell (Bradenton, Fla./Braden River HS) and Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS). Each making their collegiate debuts, Swindell turned in a 79-76/155 to split 11th place, while Guoynes held a scorecard of 82-76/158 for a four-way tie for 16th.

Junior Cassie Cleary (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS/Daytona State College) and freshman Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) rounded out the Eagles’ scoring for the day. Cleary opened the event with a two-round score 81-80/161 for a share of 26th, and Price sits alone in 39th after shooting a 87-89/166.
