Fall Season Ends with Fourth Place Finish at Hatter Classic for Women's Golf

DeLAND, Fla. – Submitting its best round of the tournament, 305, on Tuesday, the FGCU women’s golf team wrapped up the 2011 fall season with a fourth place finish at the Holiday Inn Express Hatter Classic, hosted by Stetson at the Victoria Hills Golf Club in DeLand, Fla. Senior Fabienne Haremza (Wildermen, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) led the Eagles through the two-day event, placing second overall.

After rounds of 316 and 315 on Monday, the 305 in Tuesday’s finale brought the Eagles’ tournament scorecard to 936, placing them fourth in the eight-team field. The Green and Blue finished ahead of USC Upstate’s fifth place score of 324-312-317/953, while sitting behind third place Jacksonville’s 317-300-308/925. Host Stetson took the team title with a three-day score of 297-307-293/897.

"I am really proud of the way we played today," said head coach Sarah Trew. "We really made it a point to fight for every single shot and turned in a solid round. This is great momentum to take into the off-season. I am extremely happy for Fabienne. She has worked really hard this whole fall and she is seeing that pay off.

Holding third place after 36 holes on Monday, Haremza moved into second place with a final round 77 which brought her three-round total to 223 (73-73-77). With her best finish and score of the fall season, the Wildermen, South Africa native finished among the leaders in par-4 scoring (+6), par-5 scoring (-2), total pars (34) and birdies (8).

Also supplying her best tournament score, freshman Kristin Swindell (Bradenton, Fla./Braden River HS) scored her lowest single-round of the fall on Tuesday, 75, moving her into 12th on the leaderboard with a 80-78-75/233. The newcomer also finished among the best in the field in par-4 scoring (+11) and total pars (34), which also led the Eagles.

Finishing 23rd overall, freshman Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) submitted a counting score in each of the three rounds. With her lowest score of the event on Tuesday, 76, Price finished with a scorecard of 80-84-76/240, while ranking among the tournament's best in total pars (32).

Rounding out the Eagles’ squad at the competition was sophomore Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) and junior Cassie Cleary (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS/Daytona State College), placing 31st and tied for 36th, respectively. With her best score of the fall, Van Etten finished the event with an 83-80-82/245, while Cleary supplied a counting score for the Green and Blue on the final day, 77, to bring her tournament score to 87-86-77/250.

With the fall season now in the books, the FGCU women’s golf team will have some time to prepare for the 2012 championship spring season. The Green and Blue open the spring campaign with a trip to Jacksonville, Fla. to compete at the Courtyard Classic, hosted by Jacksonville, at the Hidden Hills Country Club from Feb. 5-7.
