JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – With one round complete at the Courtyard Classic in Jacksonville, Fla., the FGCU women’s golf team sits in fifth place on the team leaderboard at the Hidden Hills Golf Club. Freshman Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) paced the Eagles through the opening round, currently in a share of sixth place overall.
“I'm extremely proud of the ladies today. We had a bumpy front nine and could have easily let this round get away from us,” said first-year head coach Sarah Trew. “Everyone seemed to settle in nicely on the back and focused on taking one shot at a time. Our putts didn't drop today, so tomorrow I feel like will be able to fire on all cylinders and see some birdies.”
With a score of 317, the Eagles sit in fifth place in the field of six teams. Mercer sits atop the leaderboard with a 296, ahead of second place tournament host Jacksonville’s 306.
Currently second in the field of 33 individuals with 14 total pars, Guoynes enters Monday’s second round of play in a five-way tie for sixth place with a score of 76. Senior Fabienne Haremza (Wilderman, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) also finished the day inside the top 15 with an opening-round 77, good for a share of 11th overall.
Also supplying counting scores on the day, freshman Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) and sophomore Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) sit in a tie for 23rd and 26th, respectively, with rounds of 81 and 83.
The second round of the Courtyard Classic picks back up from the Hidden Hills Golf Club on Monday morning with tee times beginning at 9 a.m. Results and recaps from each round of the 54-hole event will be available at www.FGCUAthletics.com.
