MIAMI, Fla. – Battling some tough weather conditions to open the tournament, the FGCU women’s golf team wrapped up the first 36 holes of the Hurricane Invitational, hosted by the University of Miami, on Monday in Miami, Fla. at the Deering Yacht & Country Club. Freshman Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) leads the Green and Blue heading into Tuesday’s final par-71 round.
“The conditions were tough today. The winds were gusting around 35 mph and it was a mental test for everyone,” said first-year head coach Sarah Trew. “I am proud of the way we bounced back in the second round, and tomorrow I think we will be able to relax and play a little more freely which should lower our scores.”
Opening the event with an 8 a.m. shotgun start, the Eagles finished the day’s first round with a team score of 338. The Green and Blue lowered their mark by 11 strokes in round two, finishing with a two-round total of 665 to place in a share of 15th on the leaderboard. Tournament host Miami leads the 16-team field into the final round with a scorecard reading 306-291/597.
Guoynes holds the lowest score among the Eagles enter the final round of play, submitting an opening 85 and following with a team-low score of 76 in round two, to place tied for 51st on the 85-player leaderboard with a day one total at 161. Sitting three strokes back of Guoynes, sophomore Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) holds a two-round score of 85-79/164 for a share of 60th.
Also providing counting scores on the day, freshman Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) and senior Fabienne Haremza (Wildermen, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) supplied scores of 89-79/168 and 79-93/172, respectively, to hold sole possession of 70th and 79th place.
