NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – Opening play at the 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship on Monday morning at the Venetian Bay Golf Club in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., the FGCU women’s golf team sits in fifth place on the nine-team leaderboard.

“Today we played pretty solid as a team and I am very proud of the way Fabs (Haremza) and Chelsea (Guoynes) stepped up for us,” said first-year head coach Sarah Trew. “I think we got tired on the back nine which may have cost us some shots. Tomorrow we just need to concentrate on keeping our foot on the gas the entire round.”

Competing in its fourth A-Sun Championship, the Eagles’ four-member squad opened the tournament with a team score of 312 to sit alone in fifth place, four strokes ahead of USC Upstate (316). Four teams broke 300 on the afternoon, with ETSU leading the field into the second day of competition with two-over par 290.

Finishing the day in the Top 15 on the leaderboard, senior Fabienne Haremza (Wilderman, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) and freshman Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) fired rounds of 75 and 76, respectively, to sit in shares of 10th and 15th overall. Ranking among the tournament leaders, Haremza provided a pair of birdies with 11 pars while Guoynes pared 12 holes in the opening round.

Sophomore Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS), 80, and freshman Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS), 81, rounded out the scoring through the opening round, sitting in shares of 29th and 34th. Price finished even in par 3 scoring to rank among the leaders in the field.

With a five-under par 67, ETSU’s Gabriella Wahl leads the 44-player field into the second round, three strokes ahead of defending champion Alex Buelow (70) of Stetson.

The three-day championship tournament resumes with the second round of play on Tuesday morning from the Venetian Bay Golf Club beginning at 8 a.m. Fans can follow the action at www.Golfstat.com, while results and recaps from each day of the event will be available at www.FGCUAthletics.com.
