NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – In its final competition of the 2011-12 season, the FGCU women’s golf team finished in seventh place among the nine league schools at the 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship on Wednesday afternoon at the Venetian Bay Golf Club in New Smyrna Beach, Fla.
“Today was a disappointing day, as we were in a good position to have a top five finish and struggled a little,” said first-year head coach Sarah Trew. “We really need to work on trying to find a way to get the ball in the hole when we are not playing our best. I am so proud of Chelsea and Georgia for their play today, and Chelsea for a great championship overall.”
Sitting in a share of fifth place entering the final round of play, the Eagles wrapped up the event with a round of 319 to move into seventh place on the final leaderboard with a three-round score of 312-308-319/939. Leading the field entering the day, Kennesaw State (292-284-295/871) held on for the team title, outlasting second-place ETSU (290-292-293/875) by four strokes.
Guiding the Eagles into the tournament’s final round, freshman Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) was the top finisher for the Green and Blue, matching her opening-round score of 76 on the final day to place 14th with a three-round scorecard of 76-75-76/227.
With an FGCU tournament-low round of two-over 74 on the final day, freshman Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) also cracked the Top 25 for the Eagles, finishing 23rd with a score of 81-76-74/231.
In her final competition as a member of the Green and Blue, senior Fabienne Haremza (Wilderman, South Africa/Glenwood House/Lamar University) wrapped up the competition in a share of 33rd on the individual leaderboard, supplying a three-day total of 75-77-86/238.
Rounding out the scoring on the afternoon for the Eagles, sophomore Megan Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./J.W. Mitchell HS) took 38th, with a score of 80-80-83/243.
ETSU’s Gabriella Wahl (67-73-73/213) survived a two-hole playoff with Mercer’s Lacey Fears (71-70-72/213) to earn medalist honors.
With the season now complete, the Eagles head into the offseason to prepare for the 2012-13 season. Following eight Top 10 finishes, including three 4th places and one 3rd place, this season, the Green and Blue are set to welcome back five student-athletes and have already signed one NLI for next season.
