Women's Golf Finishes 10th at the Hurricane Invitational

MIAMI, Fla. – Following the final day at the season-opening Hurricane Invitational at Deering Bay Yacht & Country Club in Miami, Fla., the FGCU women’s golf team placed 10th on the 16-team leaderboard. Individually, redshirt freshman Kristin Swindell (Bradenton, Fla./Braden River HS) led the squad, sitting in a tie for 29th overall.

“Today we left a few shots out there but overall I am pleased with our finish in the field,” said head coach Sarah Trew. “I think we learned from our mistakes and can take that confidence into the next event.”

The Eagles wrapped up the second round Tuesday morning and finished with a second round score of 305 to move them into eighth place after two rounds. The Green and Blue stumbled with a final round score of 316 to drop back into 10th place with a total score of 935 (314-305-316).

Baylor finished the tournament on top with a final score of 883 (298-289-296) followed by Texas State with a score of 887 (292-302-293) and host Miami with a total score of 898 (301-300-297) to round out the top three teams.

Swindell led the Eagles carding scores of 78, 75 and 78 for a final score of 231 (+18) throughout the three rounds.Redshirt junior Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus HS) finished in a tie for 36th with scores of 75 and 78 in the final two rounds after carding an 80 in the opening round to finish out with a final score of 233.

Sophomore Georgia Price (Winchester, England/Fort Myers HS) finished in a tie for 41st with a final score of 235 (79-80-76) followed by freshman Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy HS) in a tie for 46th with a final score of 236 (77-75-84).

Freshman Rebecca Van Etten (Trinity, Fla./JW Mitchell HS) rounded out the five-player field for the Eagles in a tie for 84th place with a final score of 265 (90-91-84).

Sophomore Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS) played as an individual and finished in 58th place with a final score of 240 (83-78-79). Her final score was not tallied into the total team score.

The Green and Blue will return to the course when they head to Broussard, La. to take part in the Le Triomphe Collegiate Invitational on February 18-19. results and a recaps from the tournament will be available at FGCUATHLETICS.com at the conclusion of each day.
