DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s golf team will travel to Florida’s East Coast this weekend to compete in the 2013 LPGA Xavier Invitational at LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach. The three-day event will feature three rounds on the par-72, 6,178 yard course.
The event, hosted by Xavier University, will include 18 teams. The Eagles will challenge Bethune-Cookman, Creighton, Daytona State, FAU, Illinois State, McNeese State, Mercer, Morehead State, Northern Kentucky University, North Dakota, North Dakota State, Samford, Stetson, South Dakota, South Dakota State, UNF and Xavier. The field includes four Atlantic Sun rivals, giving FGCU a glimpse of this spring’s championship competition, while also pitting the Eagles against teams from the Big East, Big Sky, Conference USA, MEAC, Missouri Valley, Ohio Valley, Summit League, Southern and Southland Conferences.
The Xavier Invitational is a 54-hole tournament with 18 holes played on each day. The first two rounds will have an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start, with the final round teeing off at 8:15 a.m. After the first round, hole assignments will be determined by teams’ 18-hole, and 36-hole scores.
The Eagles will utilize a lineup of Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus High School, Georgia Price (Bude, England/Fort Myers High School), Emma Smyser (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast High School), Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central High School) and Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane).
In last year’s LPGA Xavier Invitational, the Eagles led the field through the first two rounds of play with scores of 310 and 308. FGCU carded a 312 on day two to finish just six strokes behind tournament winner, Old Dominion. The total score of 930 was nine strokes ahead of third-place finisher, Mercer.
FGCU enters this year’s LPGA Xavier Invitational after a first-place finish at the 2013 Eagle Invitational at Worthington Country Club. After completing the opening round in third place, the Eagles gained seven strokes to overcome The University of West Florida and tie day-one leader Barry University. FGCU and Barry compiled team scores of 596 through two rounds, with the Eagles carding the best second-round score at 293.
Individually, the team was led by Carlson, who took home the individual championship and helped FGCU to the strong finish.
Price placed fourth in the two-day event with a total score of 149. Sara Detlefsen (Eagan, Minn./Minnesota Virtual Academy) and Guoynes both tied for eighth place with total scores of 153, while Yong rounded out the lineup with a final score of 159.
Following the LPGA Xavier Invitational, the Green and Blue will compete in the Pat Bradley Invitational, hosted by FIU at Lakewood Ranch Country Club in Sarasota, Fla. Oct. 20-22.
