DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The FGCU women’s golf team moved ahead in the standings to conclude the LPGA Xavier Invitational with an 11th place finish.  The Eagles recorded a weekend-low score of 309 in Monday’s final round to finish the three-day tournament with an overall score of 957.  FGCU finished 64 strokes behind tournament champion and Atlantic Sun foe, Mercer University.

“Today we played much better and much more like the team I know we can be,” said head coach Sarah Trew of the final round at LPGA International.  “We still left a few shots out there and made some silly mental mistakes but those are easy to overcome.  We are going to work hard before the next event and try to sharpen our games and learn how to keep from compounding our mistakes.”

Overall, the Eagles finished ahead of South Dakota State, Bethune-Cookman, Northern Kentucky, South Dakota, FAU, Creighton and North Dakota.  Among A-Sun competition, FGCU sat behind UNF, Stetson and Mercer, who all finished in the top six.

Senior Briana Carlson (Inverness, Fla./Citrus High School) finished in a tie for 29th place after carding a 79 in the third round.  Carlson’s three-round score was 233, after shooting a 77 in the first two rounds.

Chelsea Guoynes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central High School) placed second among the Eagles with a tournament ranking of 46th and an overall score of 240 (80-84-76).  Guoynes cut eight strokes off her Sunday score with a card of 76 in Monday’s round.

Junior Georgia Price (Bude, England/Fort Myers High School) tied her best score from the tournament with a 79 in the third round.  Price finished third among the Green and Blue and ranked 54th in the field with a total score of 244 (79-86-79).

Sophomore Mei Khuan Yong (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia/S.M.K. Cochrane) improved by 12 strokes in the third round and carded a 75, the Eagles’ best round of the day.  Yong’s total score was 247 (85-87-75) in three rounds, while classmate Emma Smyser (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast High School) rounded out the Eagles’ lineup with an overall score of 253 (86-80-87).

Bailey Gray of Samford University was the LPGA Xavier Invitational’s individual winner.  Gray carded scores of 73, 70 and 69 for a four-under score of 212.
