FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Eagles won The Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic with their second straight win. The Eagles overcame an early score in the second period from Florida International to win a thrilling 3-2 match in overtime Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex. Freshman Lindsay Haw scored the game winning goal 91st minute and was named tournament MVP.

 

With five seconds remaining in the first period, the Eagles sent a corner kick to freshman Lindsay Haw (Palm City, Fla.) for a header that hit the crossbar and came out. After numerous misses in the first period, the game remained tied at zero. The Eagles put up eight shots, and held the Panthers to only three shots in the first period.

 

The Panthers were to the first to score in the second period when Francesca Chong crossed a pass to Amy Jackson at the top of the box to put the Panthers up by one in the 51st minute.  

 

The Eagles were unfazed by the Panthers score, and in the came back with one of their own in the 61st minute when freshman Caytlan MacKenzie (Calgary, Canada) received a long pass and cut thru three defenders to tie the game up at one.

 

That wasn’t enough for the Eagles, in the 68th minute freshman Jessica Belmonte (Darien, Ill.) set up the corner kick to sophomore Amber McCall (Fort Myers, Fla.) who sent it to senior Jessica Zabel (Lake Mary, Fla.) for a header to give the Eagles their first lead of the game.

 

The Panthers responded four minutes later on a breakaway by Maria Gualdron to tie the game at two. With the late Panther score, the game was sent in to overtime.

 

In the 91st minute, a throw in by freshman Jessica Belmonte to sophomore Amber McCall that found Lindsay Haw for a firm header that got by Panther goalkeeper Madeline Gannon.

 

“This was another great performance, we battled all game and never gave up,” said FGCU head coach Jim Blakenship.

 

The Eagles will head to Dover, Delaware to face the Hornets from Delaware State. Kick-off is set for 5:00 pm on Friday September 7th.
