Womens Soccer Releases 2008 Schedule
“It is important to play a very strong non-conference schedule to prepare us for conference play," said Head Coach Jim Blankenship. “Last year was a great year starting point, we have worked hard and continue to make improvements this off-season, and the only way to improve is to play tough teams.”
FGCU will kick off the 2008 season with two consecutive contests at home in Fort Myers. The Eagles will battle Nova Southeastern in a scrimmage on August 16, and begin regular season play on August 22 as they host Florida Atlantic at the new FGCU Soccer Complex at 7:00pm. Florida Atlantic went 9-8-2 overall in 2007 and finished sixth in the Sun Belt (6-4-1).
The Eagles then travel to Miami, Fla. to face Florida International in the on August 24. FIU finished 3-11-1overall and 1-8-2 in the Sun Belt.
The Eagles will host Buffalo on August 29 before hitting the road for three consecutive matches, one in Boca Raton, Fla. to Indiana State in the FIU Classic (Aug.31), then at Wingate (Sept.4), and finally at Gardner-Webb (Sept.6).
The Eagles will be back at home to host Howard University (Sept.10) before taking on No.2 Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla. Florida State went 18-6-3 and earned their first National Championship appearance in school history. In the 2007 NCAA Women's Soccer National Championship game, the USC Trojans held FSU, the nation's second leading scoring team without a goal for just the second time all season to take the National Championship game 2-0.
FGCU begins its Atlantic Sun conference schedule with a pair of home match ups against reigning A-Sun champion Kennesaw State (Sept.26) and Mercer (Sept.28).
The Eagles will continue their conference schedule as they travel for three consecutive road games at Campbell (Oct.2), North Florida (Oct.10), and Jacksonville (Oct.12), before hosting Lipscomb (Oct.17), and Belmont (Oct.19).
The Eagles face A-Sun foes, USC Upstate (Oct.24), East Tennessee State (Oct.26) on the road, and host Stetson (Nov.1) to finish the regular season.
