Women's Soccer Opens 2008 With Win
Sunday, August 24, 2008

Miami, Fla. - The FGCU women's soccer team scored three in the first half to take FIU 3-2, in the first match of the season for each team Sunday evening at University Park.

“It’s not easy to win on the road, and tonight we came out very strong and got ahead early” said head coach Jim Blankenship.” We came out with a lot of enthusiasm and had a phenomenal first half. This was a great way to start off the season, and we very excited at what the future holds”

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the 8th minute on a goal by Katie Donnellan (Lake Mary, Fla.) off of a long ball from freshman Katherine Correllus (Merritt Island, Fla.).

The Eagles added two more scores late in the first half on goals by sophomore Casey Lademann (Flagler Beach, Fla.) and freshman Amanda Goble (Lutz, Fla.). Ladmann took the free kick for the Eagles and found the back of the net in the 35th minute to put the Eagles up 2-0. Just ten minutes later, a shot by freshman Jeannel Huffman (Clearwater, Fla.) was deflected by FIU goalkeeper Melanie Raimo and Goble was there for the rebound to put the Eagles up 3-0 going in to the half.

The Golden Panthers tallied their first goal in the 65th minute on a shot by Claudia Cardenas (Visalia, Calif.) off of a perfect through ball from Jessica Gambill (Jacksonville, Fla.). Pappas then brought FIU within one in the 90th minute on a goal off of a loose ball in the box but that would be as close as the Golden Panthers would come as the Eagles walked away with the victory.

Freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Powers (Seffner, Fla.) came up with six saves in her first collegiate match.

The Eagles will be back in action on Friday, August 29 as they host the University of Buffalo in the home opener at 7:00 p.m. at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
