Women's Soccer Downs Austin Peay 2-0
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s soccer team (4-2-1) registered their fifth consecutive shutout with a 2-0 victory over Austin Peay (1-5-1) Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex. The Eagles tallied a goal in each half to extend their win streak to four straight games.
"We always talk about creating chances and if you create enough chances something good is bound to happen,” said head coach Jim Blankenship.”Today we created enough opportunities and were able to put a few in the net. Austin Peay’s goalkeeper made some great saves to keep them in the game but we were able to control much of the match to earn another victory.”
Senior Amber McCall (Fort Myers, Fla.) recorded the game winner in the 22nd minute to keep the Eagles win streak alive, as Jessica Swartzentruber (Sarasota, Fla.) added her second goal of the season.
The Eagles defense stepped up once again, only allowing two Austin Peay shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Powers (Seffner, Fla.) earned the win and her fourth shutout of the season.
McCall’s game winner came after FGCU was awarded a penalty kick after Swartzentruber was fouled inside the Lady Governors’18-yard box. McCall took the penalty kick and buried the shot just inside the left post to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead.
The Eagles second goal of the match came after Kelli Haemmelmann (St.Petersburg, Fla.) sent a great ball from midfield to Swartzentruber. The Sarasota native was able to chip it over a sliding Carley Newman to put the Eagles up 2-0 in the 65th minute.
In the match, the Eagles put up 22 shots, the second consecutive game that the Eagles have registered 20 shots or more. FGCU also held the advantage in corner kicks 3-0.
The Eagles will travel to Jacksonville, Fla. for the UNF Tournament Sept. 18 and Sept. 20. The Eagles will face the Citadel to kickoff the tournament on Friday at 2:00 p.m., and then face Mississippi State on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. to conclude the tournament.
