Women's Soccer Looks to Stay Undefeated in Conference
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s soccer team looks to stay atop the A-Sun as they continue conference play this Saturday as they host Campbell at the FGCU Soccer Complex. The match is scheduled to kickoff at 1:00 p.m.
With a 7-3-1 record heading into this weekend, the Eagles are tied for first in the league standings with Jacksonville (5-5-0, 2-0-0 A-Sun) and Belmont (5-4-1, 2-0-0 A-Sun).The Eagles own the league's best defense (0.71 team goals-against average) and have won seven of their last eight outings - the lone loss was a 1-0 setback against Mississippi State on Sept. 20.
The Eagles are 4-0 at home this season, and have outscored their opponents by 8-0 score at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
Senior midfielder Amber McCall earned Player of the Week laurels by netting two game-winning goals for the Eagles while teammate Stephanie Powers allowed only one goal in two matches to earn conference defensive honors.
McCall shares the league lead with three game winners, and leads the Eagles with four goals.
Powers leads the A-Sun in goals against average (0.78) and shutouts (5).
FGCU has won the two previous meetings with the Camels by a 5-0 combined score. Lindsay Haw, Amber McCall and Amanda Goble collected goals against the Camels last season as they topped Campbell 3-0.
With a 6-5 overall record heading into this weekend’s action, Campbell has already surpassed last year's victory total (5-10-3). The Camels opened league action with a 3-2 victory over Lipscomb last Thursday before dropping a 2-1 overtime decision Saturday to Belmont.
Campbell’s 6-5 ledger also stands as the program's best through 11 games since the 2005 club held the same
Individually, Campbell sophomore Olga Ekblom leads the team and ranks fifth in the conference in scoring with 11 points on five goals and one assist. She is also tied for the league lead in game-winning goals (3).
Keeper Jamie Panfil ranks third in goals-against average (1.32) and shutouts (3).
