Women's Soccer Falls to Campbell in Final Minutes
Saturday, October 03, 2009

FORT MYERS, Fla. -  With less than a minute and a half remaining in regulation,  the Campbell Camels scored the game’s only goal to hand the Florida Gulf Coast University women’s soccer team a disappointing 1-0 loss Saturday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex.

With the win, Campbell improves their record to 7-6 (2-2 A-Sun), while the Eagles fall to 7-4-1 (2-1 A-Sun). For FGCU, the loss snaps a two-game win streak.

“It wasn’t our best performance of the season, but we did have a couple opportunities to score and we weren’t about to capitalize,” said head coach Jim Blankenship.

The Eagles controlled the ball and the momentum throughout the match, as they had numerous chances to score, keeping the Camels on their heels for most of the game. FGCU outshot the Campbell by an 8-3 margin, while connecting four shots on goal compared to just one by the Camels.

After a scoreless first half, the Eagles stepped up the pressure in the second half as sophomore Katie Donnellan (Lake Mary, Fla.) nearly gave the Eagles the lead as she took a shot just outside the box but Camels keeper Jamie Panfil made a great diving save to keep the game scoreless.

Later in the half, senior Amber McCall (Ft. Myers, Fla.) gave junior Lindsey Haw (Palm City, Fla.) an open look five-yards out that Panfil dove and stopped once again. Then, with just 5 minutes left, McCall took a shot from 30-yards out that was on target, but sailed just high.

The Camels took advantage of one of the few opportunities they had as Marisa Muller headed the ball in the net off a corner kick from Hanna Salmen with just 1:24 remaining in regulation time.

In the match, six different Eagles recorded shots with McCall leading the FGCU offense with two shots. Goalkeeper Stephanie Powers (Seffner, Fla.) finished with one save.

The Eagles are back in action this Monday as they travel to Deland, Fla. for an A-Sun match-up with Stetson at 6:00 p.m. FGCU lands back at home on October 9th as they face conference foe Jacksonville at 5:00 p.m.
