Eagles Wrap-up 2009 Season with a Pair of A-Sun Matches
FORT MYERS, Fla. – After splitting a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference matches last weekend, the FGCU women’s soccer team concludes the 2009 season with a pair of conference matches. The Eagles host ETSU on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and USC Upstate on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Sunday’s game will be the final home game for FGCU’s two seniors.
Florida Gulf Coast (9-5-3, 4-4-0 A-Sun) enters the contest after falling at Belmont 2-0 Friday night, before defeating Lipscomb 2-1, Sunday. Senior Amber and sophomore Gina Petracco recorded a goal in the match with Lindsay Haw collecting two assists. The Eagles currently sit in fourth place in the A-Sun with Campbell and Stetson.
Individually, keeper Stephanie Powers leads FGCU’s defense as the sophomore currently leads the A-Sun in goals against average (0.78) and shutouts (6). Offensively, Amber McCall leads the Eagles in points (14), goals (6), shots on goal (20) and game winners (3).
ETSU (5-11-0, 4-4-0 A-Sun) enters the contest after upsetting league-leading Kennesaw State 1-0, Sunday on senior day. The Bucs are currently in seventh in the A-Sun standings, one point behind Mercer, who at the moment holds the final spot in the six-team A-Sun Tournament.
Individually, senior forward Jordan Monty (Mesquite, Texas), leads the Buc attack after earning her third career A-Sun Offensive Player of the Week honor, Tuesday. Last week ETSU picked up wins against the Owls and USC Upstate.
Sophomore keeper Megan Masch (Virginia Beach, Va.), leads the league with 115 saves. Overall, Masch sits second in the league in save percentage and saves per match.
Overall, ETSU leads the all-time series with FGCU 2-0-0. In their last meeting the Bucs topped the Eagles with a 2-1 double overtime win last October. In the match, McCall tied the game in the 77th minutes with her fifth goal of the season. It was ETSU’s junior forward Terri Miller who knocked in the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute to give the Bucs the win.
USC Upstate (0-17-0, 0-8-0 A-Sun) enters this weekend after dropping two games last week to Kennesaw State and Mercer by a combined score of 7-0.
Offensively, the Spartans are led by junior forward Daphnee Cadet . Cadet leads the team with three goals, one assist and seven points. Keeper Sian Jenkins leads the Spartans with 801:21 minutes played, and has recorded 49 saves on the season.
Overall, FGCU leads the all-time series with USC Upstate 2-0-0. In their last meeting the Eagles dominated the Spartans in a 4-0 victory. Petracco and McCall each found the net as the Eagles fired off 19 shots. All-time, FGCU has outshot USC Upstate by a 36-10 margin.
