Women's Soccer in Third Place After Win Over ETSU
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s soccer team got their second straight Atlantic Sun victory as they defeated East Tennessee State by a score of 3-0 on Friday night at the FGCU Soccer Complex. The win puts the Eagles tied for third in the A-Sun Standings with Stetson.
With the win the FGCU improves their record to 10-5-3 (5-2-2, A-Sun), while the Buccaneers fall to 5-12-0 (4-5, A-Sun).FGCU and Stetson 9-6-2 (5-2-2, A-Sun) are tied for third in the A-Sun standings with 17 points, just one point behind Kennesaw State 8-6-0 (6-3-0,A-Sun) and Belmont 8-5-3 (5-1-3, A-Sun).
“This was a big win,” said head coach Jim Blankenship.”We came out aggressive and it really paid off. It was an all around good match, we played great defense and created many opportunities offensively.”
The Eagles dominated the Bucs in just about every aspect of the game as they outshot ETSU by a 20-3 margin and had seven corner kick opportunities to zero by the Bucs.
FGCU sophomore keeper Stephanie Powers (Seffner, Fla.) earned the win and her league leading seventh shutout as she had to make just one save.
Moments after checking into the game, sophomore Gina Petracco (Fort Myers, Fla.) got the Eagles on the board as she took a perfect feed from senior Amber McCall (Fort Myers, Fla.) that put her all alone with ETSU keeper Megan Masch. Petracco’s shot beat Masch to give the Eagles the early 1-0 lead.
McCall shined as she was involved in all three scoring plays for the Green and Blue as she finished the night with two goals and an assist. McCall gave the Eagles a 2-0 cushion as she took a shot from the top of the box that was out of the reach of the ESTU goalie.
With less than a minute remaining in the first half, FGCU junior Lindsey Haw (Palm City, Fla.) was fouled inside the box, which resulted in a penalty kick opportunity for the Eagles. McCall took the penalty kick and made it look easy as she shot it in the lower left hand corner of the box to beat Masch.
Both teams would stay off the score sheet in the second half as the Eagles cruised to tenth win of the season.
The Eagles will be back in action this Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. when they do battle with A-Sun foe USC Upstate for senior day at the FGCU Soccer Complex. The Eagles will honor seniors Amber McCall and Emily Barrett before Sunday’s match.
