FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU women’s soccer team continued their spring season with a 2-0 victory this past Sunday against the Florida Gators in Gainesville. With the win the Eagles picked up their third consecutive victory and remain undefeated this spring.

The Eagles controlled play from the start and missed an opportunity for an early goal when Jessica Swartzentruber (Sarasota, Fla.) missed with a header off a cross from Lindsay Haw (Palm City, Fla.), eight minutes into the game. Swartzentruber would again be denied six minutes later on a one-two that put her in along with the keeper.

The Blue and Green were finally able to get on the scoreboard as Katie Donnellan (Lake Mary, Fla.) found the back of the net 24 minutes into the game on an assist from Swartzentruber. The game would stay 1-0 at the half.

The second half again saw the Eagles control play as FGCU’s swarming defense held the Gators at bay. Head Coach Blankenship said, “I was extremely pleased with our performance and the way our back played.”

Olivia Elias’s (Coral Springs, Fla.) goal with 12 minutes remaining sealed the victory and kept the Eagles undefeated this spring. “I am proud of our team and program,” said Blankenship. “We played well and continue to get better each time we take the field. This does wonders for our young program.”

The Eagles continue their spring season and will participate in a community endeavor Saturday afternoon, March 27, by hosting a soccer clinic for girls 14 and under at the FGCU Soccer Complex at 4 p.m. Following the clinic, the Eagles will take on the University of Miami at 6 p.m. The event will culminate with an autograph session with both teams. The cost is $5.00 per person and tickets are on sale now.
