Eagles Open 2010 With First Practice
Women’s soccer begins fourth season in program history
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The summer is over and the FGCU women’s soccer team officially returned to campus to begin training for the 2010 season on Wednesday when it held its first practice.
The Eagles began their 2010 season at 9 a.m. today with a team meeting followed by an afternoon practice at 2 p.m. that was cut short due to lightning. The team will take the field again tonight and twice-a-day leading up to an August 12th exhibition match at FAU.
Under the direction of fourth-year head coach Jim Blankenship, the Eagles return 22 players, including 10 starters, from the last year’s squad that won a conference-best 11 games in 2009 and finished one point shy of an Atlantic Sun regular season crown. The Eagles went 6-2-2 in the A-Sun to finish in third place.
“The kids were excited. There was a great buzz to practice and I really liked what I saw,” said Blankenship. “We have a good group of seniors and we felt like going into today that leadership and depth would be the key. Today, I felt like that showed.”
FGCU kicks off its season at the FGCU Soccer Complex on Sunday, August 15, when it hosts the U-17 Mexican National Team in an exhibition match beginning at 4 p.m. Tickets for the match can be purchased through the FGCU Ticket Office in Alico Arena either in person or by phone at (239) 590-7145. Tickets are also available on www.FGCUathletics.com/tickets. Individual tickets will be $6, while group rates for 10 or more are $3.
