Women's Soccer Selected Second in A-Sun Preseason Poll
Monday, August 16, 2010

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After finishing third in the Atlantic Sun in its first three seasons of Division I, the FGCU women’s soccer team was picked to finish second in the 2010 A-Sun Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league’s head coaches and announced Monday.

Defending A-Sun co-regular season and tournament champ Kennesaw State was picked to repeat its performance from 2009, receiving eight of the 11 first place votes. The Eagles received one first place vote, while Belmont, the other defending co-regular season champ, received two votes and was predicted third.

In the same voting, redshirt junior KC Correllus was selected to the preseason All-Conference team. The Eagles have boasted a player on the preseason team in each of the last three seasons. Current senior forward Lindsay Haw was picked in 2009 and former forward Amber McCall earned the honor in 2008.

The Eagles enter their fourth season as a member of Division I and boast a 32-16-6 overall record. FGCU returns 22 players from last year’s club that finished just one point shy of a regular season crown, closed on a three-game win streak, posted nine shutouts and led the A-Sun with just 14 goals against. Under fourth-year head coach Jim Blankenship, the Blue and Green hold an 18-8-5 league mark and six Eagles have earned All-Conference honors.

Correllus is one of three defenders represented on the preseason team. The junior has played two seasons with the Eagles and was an All-Conference selection in each of those years. Named to the 2009 Atlantic Sun All-Conference first team, the Merritt Island, Fla., native was one of six players to start each contest and was part of the defense that posted nine shutouts last season.

The Eagles finished the preseason 2-0, after defeating FAU (2-1) and the U-17 Mexican National team (4-1) in exhibition contests. Freshman Jenci Villaverde and redshirt sophomore Ashley Cielsielczyk each tallied two goals in the contests to help FGCU outscore its opponents, 6-2.

The Blue and Green officially opens the season at home on Friday, August 20, at 7 p.m. against Barry University. FGCU is 2-1 in home openers, but hasn’t started the regular season at home since the 2007 season.
