Women's Soccer Trio Named to A-Sun Players to Watch List
Thursday, August 19, 2010

FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU women’s soccer players, redshirt junior KC Correllus, sophomore Danielle Faller and junior Stephanie Powers, were named to TopDrawerSoccer’s Top 20 Players to Watch list in the Atlantic Sun.

A 2010 A-Sun preseason All-Conference selection, Correllus, earned the fifth spot on the list. The redshirt junior represented one of three defenders on the preseason team. She has played two seasons with the Eagles and was an All-Conference selection in each of those years. Named to the 2009 Atlantic Sun All-Conference first team, the Merritt Island, Fla., native was one of six players to start each contest and was part of the defense that posted nine shutouts last season.

The reigning Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year, Faller landed at No. 8 on the list and returns this season after starting in all 19 contests last year. The sophomore midfielder joined fellow Eagle Lindsay Haw as the second FGCU player to win Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year honors in the program’s three-year existence – Haw earned the honor in 2007. Faller racked up four points on the year including the game-winning goal against Army.

The Eagles’ main keeper, Powers, rounded out the top 10 list after finishing the 2009 season with a 0.79 goals against average and a save percentage of .822, both good for second-best in the conference. The junior earned an A-Sun All-Conference second team nod after allowing a conference-low 14 goals and shutting out seven opponents. The Seffner, Fla., native posted a record of 9-5-3 and made 61 saves.

After finishing third in the Atlantic Sun in its first three seasons of Division I, the Eagles were picked to finish second in the 2010 A-Sun Preseason Poll and also earned one of the 11 first place votes, the conference announced Monday. The Eagles finished the preseason 2-0, after defeating FAU (2-1) and the U-17 Mexican National team (4-1) in exhibition contests.

The Blue and Green officially opens the season at home on Friday at 7 p.m. against Barry University. FGCU is 2-1 in home openers, but hasn’t started the regular season at home since the 2007 season.
