Women's Soccer Blanks Vermont, 2-0
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The FGCU women’s soccer team continued its winning ways as the Eagles picked up their second consecutive shutout, defeating Vermont, 2-0, in the opening game of the 2010 Black Knights Classic at Clinton Field on Friday afternoon.
“I am real pleased with the results. It was a good team effort and I thought our goalkeeping and backs effort were ready for Vermont’s attack,” said head coach Jim Blankenship. “They had several good chances, so I was glad to get the shutout and see focus from our team for the entire game.”
With the win, FGCU evens its record to 3-3, while Vermont falls to 1-3 on the season. The win is the first for the Eagles against a team in the American East Conference.
Senior Caytlan MacKenzie found the back of the net at the 16:22 mark for her first goal of the season. Freshman Jenci Villaverde connected with MacKenzie at the top of the box as she fired it past the right side of the Vermont keeper to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
FGCU took its lead into intermission after holding a 10-3 advantage in shots and limiting the Catamounts to just one corner.
Villaverde added a goal of her own just five minutes into the second half on a cross from sophomore Jennifer Crittenberger. The freshman forward booted a shot to the left side from 20 yards out to give FGCU a two-goal, 2-0, lead. Villaverde now leads the Eagles with two goals and three assists in the first six games of her career.
Vermont gave FGCU a scare as its final four shots in the last five minutes of the game were on net, but junior Stephanie Powers knocked away each one to notch her third shutout of the season.
Junior Olivia Elias and senior Lindsay Haw had four shots apiece to help FGCU edge the Catamounts in shots 23-11 for the game.
Powers had eight saves while Alyssa Kelly played 90 minutes between the pipes for Vermont, saving four shots.
The Eagles wrap up the Black Knights Classic against first-time opponent Marist on Sunday. Game time is set for 11 a.m.
