Women's Soccer Falls to Marist, 1-0
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Despite holding a 20-11 advantage in shots, the FGCU women’s soccer team could not overcome Marist’s early goal as the Eagles dropped the game, 1-0, at Clinton Field on Sunday morning in the third game of the Black Knights Classic.
The loss drops FGCU’s record to 3-4 heading into the opening weekend of conference play. Marist improves to 2-4 on the season. The Red Foxes dropped their first game of the tournament, 3-0, to host Army.
Marist struck early as it took back-to-back corner kicks, coming up with a goal off the boot of Chelsea Botta on the second one at the 2:11 mark. Kathryn Hannis had her shot blocked to line up Rycke Guiney for another corner which found Botta and the Red Foxes with a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Jessica Swartzentruber tried to even the score in the 26th minute when she went on a one-on-one with the Marist keeper, but her shot to the right side was saved, ending the Eagles’ threat.
In the opening 45 minutes, FGCU held an 8-6 edge in shots and held the Red Foxes to just the opening two corner kicks.
FGCU’s pressure continued into the second frame taking three shots in the opening minutes of the half. The Eagles almost got on the board in the 59th minute when junior Katie Donnellan’s shot was tipped wide just in time for senior Lindsay Haw to pick up the rebound, but she sent it high.
Junior Stephanie Powers had a busy day in net collecting five saves in her seventh start of the season. Marist keeper Jamie Balzarni had seven saves.
The Blue and Green put seven of their total 20 shots on goal and limited the Red Foxes to just 11 for the game. Both squads only took one corner kick in the final 45 minutes.
The Eagles now ready for the opening weekend of conference action as they head to Jacksonville, Fla. to play Jacksonville and UNF on Friday and Sunday, respectively. FGCU takes on Jacksonville at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Ashley Sports Complex. Game time at UNF is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
