Women's Soccer Battles to Scoreless Draw at USC Upstate
FGCU moves to 8-4-2 on the season and 5-0-2 record in Atlantic Sun play for 17 points and second place in the league standings. The Eagles now have a 10-game unbeaten streak in A-Sun play (8-0-2) dating back to last season and have only allowed one goal in seven conference games. During the stretch, the Blue and Green have outscored their opponents, 22-2.
“We created a lot of chances, but their goalkeeper was on top of it and made us work harder,” said head coach Jim Blankenship. “We just couldn’t finish today, but we came away with one point in an away conference contest and that is always positive.”
The Eagles had their eye on a goal as they opened the first 20 minutes of play with firing four shots on target, but Upstate keeper Rachel Collins got her hands on each one. FGCU took three more shots through the scoreless first half and limited the Spartans to two shots.
The second half opened the same way the first began, with four FGCU shots and a corner kick, but the Eagles could not find the back of the net. FGCU added 10 more shots in the half, holding a 21-2 edge in shots in the opening 90 minutes.
Redshirt sophomore Ashley Ciesielczyk (Oregon, Ohio/Clay HS) almost gave FGCU the game-winning goal in the first overtime, but her header went just wide of the net. Junior Olivia Elias (Coral Springs, Fla./American Heritage-Delray) had another chance to break the tie at the 102:14 mark,
For the game FGCU outshot Upstate, 25-4 with 13 on net. Elias had seven shots including four on target, while senior Caytlan MacKenzie (Calgary, Alberta/William Aberhart) had six. The Eagles had an 11-0 edge in corner kicks.
Junior keeper Stephanie Powers (Seffner, Fla./Armwood) had her only save of the game in the second overtime to notch her fifth straight shutout. The Eagles’ defense has now held opponents scoreless for 481 minutes and own six shutouts in A-Sun action for the first time since the program’s inaugural (2007) season.
