Women's Soccer Receives Votes in NSCAA Regional Poll
FORT MYERS, Fla. – After remaining unbeaten through the weekend in Atlantic Sun action, the FGCU women’s soccer team garnered votes in the NSCAA/HendrickCars.com Southeast Region Rankings for the second straight week, announced Monday.
This marks the third time in the program’s brief four-year history that the Eagles have received votes in the regional poll. FGCU received votes last week after beating Mercer and Kennesaw State and were noticed after defeating the same teams in 2009.
Led by a game-winning goal from sophomore Jessica Swartzentruber (Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota Christian), FGCU picked up a 1-0 win at ETSU on Friday before battling to double-overtime scoreless draw at USC Upstate on Sunday. The Eagles moved to 8-4-2 on the season and sit in a third place with a 5-0-2 A-Sun mark, good for 17 points. FGCU is currently on an 10-game conference unbeaten streak (8-0-2) dating back to last year.
Boston College, who topped the poll last week, dropped to the fifth spot with UNC Greensboro after dropping two games over the weekend. North Carolina moved to the top spot with Maryland sitting in second. Florida State and Virginia wrap up the teams in the top five in a tie for third.
FGCU closes out the remainder of its schedule at home beginning with Belmont (3-10, 2-5 A-Sun) and Lipscomb (4-11, 0-7 A-Sun). Game time against the Bruins is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, while Sunday’s game begins at 1 p.m. against the Bisons. The Eagles enter the upcoming weekend on a five-game shutout streak and having allowed only one goal in conference play.
