Women's Soccer Prepares for A-Sun Home Weekend

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s soccer team looks to remain unbeaten in conference play and extend its five-game shutout streak when it welcomes Atlantic Sun foes Belmont and Lipscomb on Friday and Sunday, respectively, at the FGCU Soccer Complex.

The Eagles host the Bruins on Friday at 7 p.m., while Lipscomb travels to Stetson on Friday before heading to Fort Myers for a 1 p.m. kick-off on Sunday. FGCU will have one more game in A-Sun action (Stetson) to close out its 2010 campaign.

The Blue and Green own a 5-0-2 mark in the A-Sun to sit in third place with 17 points and an 8-4-2 record overall. FGCU has only allowed one goal in 670 minutes of conference play and is currently riding a 10-game conference unbeaten streak (8-0-2). During the stretch, FGCU has outscored its opponents, 22-2.

The Eagles garnered votes in the NSCAA/HendrickCars.com Southeast Region Rankings for the second straight week on Monday. FGCU was also picked as the 61st team in TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Tournament 64 rankings. The Tournament 64 rankings are a running attempt to project the postseason college soccer tournament qualifiers, including every automatic conference berth. For the fourth and final year, FGCU is not eligible for postseason play due to the four-year NCAA provisional period.

The Eagles enter the upcoming weekend on a five-game shutout streak, having allowed only one goal in conference play. Junior Stephanie Powers (Seffner, Fla./Armwood HS) has been excellent between the pipes, topping the conference with eight shutouts and 0.56 goals against average. Her GAA is ranked 20th in the nation while her save percentage of .860 is tied for 30th. The Eagles’ defense has now held their opponents scoreless over the last 481 minutes and own six shutouts in A-Sun action for the first time since the program’s 2007 inaugural season.

Senior Lindsay Haw (Palm City, Fla./Martin County HS) leads the offense with three goals and an assist on the season, while sophomore Jessica Swartzentruber (Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota Christian) also has three goals on the year. In total, 13 players have tallied a goal this season and 12 own an assist.

Belmont (3-10, 2-5 A-Sun), who advanced to the championship game of the A-Sun tournament the last two years, is currently on a three-game losing streak after dropping contests to Campbell, Jacksonville and UNF. Lauren Paynter leads the Bruins with three goals and four assists, while Jamie Loftis and Laura Harris each own two goals. FGCU holds a 2-1 series lead against Belmont. The Bruins won the last meeting between the teams, 2-0, but the Eagles beat Belmont, 1-0, in each of the first two meetings between the schools.

The Lady Bisons (4-11, 0-7 A-Sun) travel to Stetson on Friday before playing at FGCU on Sunday. It has been a tough season for Lipscomb as it is currently on a seven-game skid in conference play, picking up its last win against Citadel on Sept. 12. The Lady Bisons’ Tatjana Shirley paces the team with two goals and one assist. The Blue and Green have a 2-0-1 record against Lipscomb it their short history. The teams battled to a 1-1 tie in 2008, while FGCU picked up wins in 2007 and 2009.
