Correllus, Elias Earn NSCAA All-Region Honors
FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU women’s soccer redshirt junior defender KC Correllus (Merritt Island, Fla./Satellite HS/Florida State) and junior midfielder Olivia Elias (Coral Springs, Fla./American Heritage-Delray HS) were named to the 2010 NSCAA/Performance Subaru All-South Region teams after leading the Eagles’ to their first-ever A-Sun Regular Season Title.
Correllus made her way onto the All-Region first team with players from SEC foes Florida, Auburn and South Carolina, while Elias was named to the third team.
After helping FGCU to an unblemished 8-0-2 record in conference play, Correllus became the first player in Atlantic Sun history to earn both Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors in the same season since the defensive award was added in 2007. The native of Merritt Island, Fla., was the center defender in a backline who helped limit conference opponents to just two goals in league play and a program-record 11 shutouts en route to the league title. Correllus posted one goal on the season, converting a penalty kick at UNF.
The All-Region accolade comes after Elias earned her first postseason honor with an A-Sun All-Conference first team selection after posting a career-high in points (8) this season. She tied senior Lindsay Haw for a team-high four goals, including the game-winning goal against Stetson to clinch the A-Sun title. The Coral Springs, Fla., native led the conference in shots per game (3.24) and ranked third in total shots with 55. Elias also dished out two assists while starting every game this season.
FGCU ended the 2010 campaign with an 11-4-2 overall record and an unbeaten 8-0-2 A-Sun mark to claim its first-ever regular season championship in the program’s short four-year history. FGCU’s conference record is the 11th of its kind in A-Sun history and the sixth since the league left divisions following the 1998 season.
Despite winning the A-Sun regular season, FGCU could not compete in the conference postseason tournament due to the NCAA reclassifying period. FGCU will be eligible for postseason play in 2011.
