FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s soccer team will get its first taste of the road this weekend when it travels to North Carolina for a pair of contests against Charlotte and Davidson. The two-game swing opens with the 49ers on Friday at 7 p.m.
The Eagles began the fifth season in program history last weekend when they hosted the Embassy Suites Kick-Off Classic. FGCU used two goals in each half to roll to a 4-1 season-opening win against Eastern Washington, but dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Syracuse last Sunday.
A pair of newcomers accounted for half of FGCU’s goals over the opening weekend, as freshman Melissa Arnold (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional HS) and sophomore Kayley Clay (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS/Lynn University) each tallied goals in their debuts in the Green and Blue. Arnold also added an assist in the opener, making her way onto the All-Tournament team with seniors Olivia Elias (Coral Springs, Fla./American-Heritage Delray HS), KC Correllus (Merritt Island, Fla./Satellite HS/Florida State) and Kat Hunter (Safety Harbor, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic HS).
The reigning Atlantic 10 Conference co-regular season champs, Charlotte will play its third straight game against an A-Sun member on Friday evening. The 49ers own a scoreless tie against North Florida and picked up a 2-1 victory over Jacksonville at the UNF Tournament. The 49ers return 17 players off last year’s club that won 16 games.
Davidson extended its home unbeaten streak to 12 games (9-0-3) last weekend with a convincing 8-1 victory over UNC Asheville. The eight goals were the most scored by the Wildcats since 2004 and came in front of a crowd of 1,072 fans. Davidson is just two years removed from a Southern Conference Tournament title and NCAA appearance.
FGCU has never faced either opponent or a team from the A-10. Charlotte is the first of two A-10 programs that the Eagles will take on this season, as Duquesne will visit Southwest Florida on Thursday, Sept. 2. The Green and Blue are 1-0 against the Southern Conference thanks to a 2-1 win over the Citadel on Sept. 18, 2009.
Live stats and video are available for both games on www.FGCUATHLETICS.com through the service provided by each of the home teams. Kick-off for Sunday’s game at Davidson is slated for 1 p.m.
