FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU women’s soccer team finishes its two-game homestand Tuesday night when it hosts ACC power Miami (4-1) at 7 p.m. at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
The Eagles are coming off an exciting 1-0 victory in double-overtime against Duquesne last Friday. Junior forward Jessica Swartzentruber (Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota Christian HS) put home the golden-goal against the Dukes after just one minute of play in the second overtime. FGCU is 4-1 and has won three-straight games.
Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Powers (Seffner, Fla./Armwood HS) has been a stalwart in net, earning her second shutout of the season versus Duquesne. Powers has only allowed three goals in five games to give her a miniscule 0.59 goals against average.
Freshman Melissa Arnold (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional HS) added her second assist of the season after setting up Swartzentruber with the game-winner against Duquesne. Arnold and Swartzentruber lead the team with two goals apiece.
FGCU has been stellar on defense thanks to redshirt senior KC Correllus (Merritt Island, Fla./Satellite HS/Florida State), redshirt senior Kathleen Hunter (Safety Harbor, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic HS), junior Jennifer Crittenburger (Lighthouse Point, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons HS), redshirt junior Ashley Ciesielczyk (Oregon, Ohio/Clay HS). The foursome along with Powers has two shutouts this season and hasn’t allowed a goal in the last 135 minutes of play.
Miami enters the game on a hot streak of its own having won four straight games after losing to No. 8 Florida to open the season. The Hurricanes took down Duquesne 3-0 with junior forward Kate Howarth adding two goals in the victory. The Hurricanes are No. 9 in the recent NSCAA Southeast Region rankings thanks to its 4-1 record. Howarth leads the team with five goals and two assists including two multi-goal games. Miami has taken each meeting between the two clubs, both of which were played in Coral Gables in 2009 and 2010.
Tickets can be purchased in-person at the FGCU Ticket Office or by calling 239-590-7145. Tickets will also be on sale at the gate starting one-hour prior to kick-off, but only cash is accepted. FGCU students, faculty and staff get in free with Eagle ID.
