FORT MYERS, Fla. – A pair of goals from senior Gina Petracco (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) and three assists from junior Ashley Ciesielczyk (Oregon, Ohio/Clay HS) highlighted an offensive outburst by the FGCU women’s soccer team in a 4-0 win over North Florida in the Atlantic Sun opener for both teams Friday night at the FGCU Soccer Complex.

As impressive as the season-high four goals were, the Eagles also earned their second straight and fourth shutout of the year to improve to 6-3-1 overall and 1-0 in the A-Sun. FGCU is now 3-0-2 in A-Sun openers and has an unbeaten streak of 14 games (12-0-2) in conference action that dates back to the end of the 2009 campaign.

Ciesielczyk’s three assists ties a program single-game record set in 2007 by both Lindsay Haw and Kayley McMillan in the same game against Alabama State. Ciesielczyk’s big night brought her season assist total to seven, just two away from the single-season record set in 2008 by Haw.

Freshman Shannen Wacker (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa HS) scored her first collegiate goal and the first of FGCU’s three tallies in the first half in the 16th minute. Petracco’s pair of goals was separated by just 12 minutes in the first half, as she brought her career total to 10.

FGCU produced a commanding 19-7 shot advantage over the 90 minutes of action, including 12 shots on goal. Senior keeper Stephanie Powers (Seffner, Fla./Armwood HS) was up to the test on all five of UNF’s shots on net to earn her 23rd career shutout and move into a tie for fifth all-time in A-Sun history.

A through-ball from Ciesielczyk to Wacker started the first goal of the game. Wacker corralled the pass in stride and was able to hit a shot on goal before UNF keeper Megan Dorsey came some 30 yards out of the net to make the tackle, but couldn’t before the ball was airborne.

Petracco struck for the first time at the 32:50 mark when she beat the keeper from the top of the 18. Sophomore Kayley Clay (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS/Lynn University) assisted on the play with a nice cross from the right corner to the top of the box.

With just 14 seconds left on the clock in the first half, Petracco found the back of the net for the second time to give the Eagles a commanding 3-0 lead heading into the break. Petracco’s goal was assisted by Ciesielczyk and it all but clinched the game, as FGCU is 19-1 all-time when scoring three or more goals.

The Green and Blue continued to supply major pressure in the second half, but Dorsey turned away several breakaway shots, including a few from Wacker.

Dorsey was replaced in the 74th minute and just four minutes later her replacement was greeted with a terrific goal from senior Amanda Goble (Lutz, Fla./Land O’Lakes HS). Freshman Melissa Arnold (Sicklerville, N.J./Timber Creek Regional HS) started the play with a corner kick to Ciesielczyk who drilled a shot off the crossbar that rebounded to Goble for a diving put-back. The goal was the second of the season for Goble and Arnold’s team-leading ninth point.

FGCU will continue its A-Sun home weekend on Sunday at 1 p.m. when it welcomes in Jacksonville to campus. The Eagles will be aiming for their first-ever win against the Dolphins, who are the only A-Sun team the Green and Blue haven’t beaten since joining the league in 2007.
