KENNESAW, Ga. – The FGCU women’s soccer team used three goals to remain unbeaten in Atlantic Sun play, shutting out Kennesaw State, 3-0, on Sunday at the KSU Soccer Stadium.
The Eagles earned their sixth straight and eighth shutout of the year to improve to 9-3-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the A-Sun. FGCU has an unbeaten streak of 18 games (15-0-3) in conference action that dates back to the end of the 2009 campaign.
“I am really proud of our team after another outstanding performance,” said head coach Jim Blankenship. “This was a true team victory and I liked how we aggressively came after our opponent today.
FGCU set the tone early in the game by taking numerous shots in the first 15 minutes, including a shot by junior forward Brittany Burt (St. Petersburg, Fla./Northeast HS/USF) that was stopped by Kennesaw State’s keeper Mel Hutto in the 14th minute.
The Eagles took the lead in the 42nd minute when Burt made a terrific cross to senior Olivia Elias (Coral Springs, Fla./American Heritage-Delay HS), who scored near the far post to make the score 1-0. It was Elias’s second goal of the season.
The Green and Blue finished the first-half with an 11-2 shot advantage, allowing just one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.
FGCU quickly added to its lead just nine minutes into the second-half after a deflection found senior Gina Petracco (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS), who blasted home her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Burt and freshman Shannen Wacker (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa HS) were credited with assists on the play.
Six minutes later, the Eagles struck again when Burt placed a corner kick that found redshirt junior Ashley Ciesielczyk (Oregon, Ohio/Clay), who headed in her second goal of the season. Burt finished the game with three assists, giving her five on the season.
FGCU held an impressive 20-4 shot advantage over the 90 minutes of action, including 13 shots on goal. Senior keeper Stephanie Powers (Seffner, Fla./Armwood HS) made three saves to post her 27th career shutout and is just two shutouts away from tying the all-time A-Sun record. Powers hasn’t allowed a goal in sixth straight games, including two double over-time affairs with a streak of 602 minutes without allowing a goal.
FGCU returns home for senior night against USC Upstate on Friday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
