Women's Soccer to host NCAA Selection Show Party At Naples Flatbread
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Fresh off winning the Atlantic Sun Championship in its first-ever appearance, the FGCU women’s soccer team will hold a NCAA Selection Show party on Monday beginning at 4 p.m. at Naples Flatbread in the Miromar Outlets. The NCAA will announce its 2011 College Cup pairings and first round sites on NCAA.com at 4:30 p.m.
FGCU captured the program's first-ever Atlantic Sun Conference tournament title on Sunday afternoon, defeating sixth-seeded Mercer, 1-0, in double-overtime. The Eagles became the first FGCU team to reach the NCAA tournament since becoming post season eligible back on August 12.
After waiting out the four-year Division I transition period since the start of the program in 2007, a few extra minutes weren’t a big deal for the top-seeded FGCU women’s soccer team as freshman Shannen Wacker’s (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa HS) goal in the 107th minute of double-overtime gave the Eagles a 1-0 win over sixth-seeded Mercer in the Atlantic Sun Championship game on Sunday afternoon at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
The golden goal was setup by a ball sent into senior Gina Petracco (Fort Myers, Fla./Bishop Verot HS), who headed a pass to Wacker on the left side of the goal box. The pass hit Wacker in stride, as she sent a one-touch shot into the right corner of the net to bring the crowd of 1,026 fans to their feet and the FGCU bench onto the field.
With the win, FGCU earned the A-Sun’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament and became the first team to win the conference tournament in its first appearance since Kennesaw State accomplished the feat in 2007.
FGCU now stands at 14-4-2 on the season, increasing the program record for single-season wins.
All first round games of the 2011 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship tournament are scheduled to begin on Friday, Nov. 11 at on-campus sites. Check back with FGCUAtletics.com for first-round pairings, locations, and times.
