FGCU opened the 2012 campaign with a convincing 7-0 victory over Lynn University on Friday evening at the FGCU Soccer Complex, as four freshmen combined to score five goals. The Eagles then leveled their record at 1-1 with a loss at the hands of in-state foe No. 12 UCF, 4-0, last Sunday.

With a pair of goals in the season opener with Lynn, freshman Ali Rogers (Naples, Fla./Gulf Coast HS) leads the team with four points, while fellow freshman Kaitlin Parker (Palm Harbor, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic HS) also netted her first career goal and assisted two others for a four-point collegiate debut. Additionally, sophomore Shannen Wacker (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa HS) picked up her first three points of the year on a goal and an assist in the game, and senior Ashley Ciesielczyk (Oregon, Ohio/Clay HS) tacked on a pair of assists.

Time in net for the Eagles has been split between redshirt freshmen Danielle LeRoy (Tampa, Fla./H.B. Plant HS) and freshman Brittany Brown (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena HS), who combined for the season opening shutout. Starting both contests, LeRoy (1-1) has clocked 134 minutes through the opening two games and has registered four saves.

FAU (0-1) travels across Alligator Alley for the weekend competitions following a 1-0 double-overtime home loss to A-Sun member Jacksonville last Friday. Junior forward Brittney Nash is the team’s top returning offensive player, scoring four goals and ranking among the Sun Belt Conference’s leaders with five assists. The team is also solid at goalkeeper, as senior Ashley Lantes has been a two-year starter and ranks second in program history with 246 career saves.

The preseason favorite to repeat as Missouri Valley Conference champions, Illinois State enters the weekend with a 1-0-1 record after a 2-1 victory in the season opener at Southeast Missouri State last Friday and a 1-1 draw in its home opener with Illinois last Sunday. Senior defender Kristin Cooley, junior midfielder Anna Stinson and sophomore forward Rachel Tejada were named to the MVC preseason All-Conference team. Tejada has accounted for all three goals through the opening two games this season. Goalkeeper Aryn Newsom has played both games in net, logging 200 minutes, allowing two goals, and recording 11 saves, including a 10-save effort against Illinois.

Green Bay (0-1) dropped its season opener against South Dakota State, 2-0, in Green Bay, Wisc. last Friday. The Phoenix returns nine of its 11 starters and 17 total letterwinners from the 2011 squad, with underclassmen comprising 23 of the 29 Phoenix players.
