FORT MYERS, Fla. – Fresh off a win and a draw at the Embassy Suites Classic last weekend, the FGCU women’s soccer team will look to maintain its winning record as it closes its season-opening five-game homestand this Friday. The Eagles will play host to in-state foe FIU on Friday, beginning at 7 p.m. at the FGCU Soccer Complex.
After picking a 2-1 victory over Wisconsin-Green Bay on Friday night with two late goals, the Eagles followed with a 2-2 draw against Illinois State in the final contest of the tournament on Sunday morning to improve their record to 2-1-1 overall. The victory over the Phoenix marked the 300th career victory for Jim Blankenship over his 18-year coaching career.
With two positive results from last weekend’s event, the Green and Blue landed four freshmen on the all-tournament squad in Ally Kasun (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield HS), Shea Rhoney (Lithia, Fla./Newsome HS), Emma Blackwell (Jenks, Okla./Jenks HS) and goalkeeper Brittany Brown (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena HS).
The Eagles have been led in scoring by Kasun, Rhoney and Blackwell, who have each tallied two goals and one assist through the opening four games. Fellow freshman Kaitlin Parker (Palm Harbor, Fla./Clearwater Central Catholic HS) has netted one goal and assisted two others, to sit second on the team with four points. Each with three points this season, sophomore Shannen Wacker (Parker, Colo./Ponderosa HS) has one goal and one assist, while senior Ashley Ciesielczyk (Oregon, Ohio/Clay HS) has a team-high three assists.
Making both starts in net last weekend, Brown has now logged just over 246 minutes this season. With a 1-0-1 record in goal, the Rochester, N.Y. product has accumulated 11 saves through her four games played, holding a 1.10 goals against average and a .786 save percentage.
FIU (2-0) will be squaring off with its third straight A-Sun opponent as it travels to Fort Myers, after picking up wins over Stetson (4-0) and Jacksonville (2-1) during the opening weekend of the season. The Panthers were scheduled to face Morehead State last Sunday in Miami, Fla., but the contest was postponed due to tropical storm Isaac.
Sophomore midfielder Scarlett Montoya leads the team in scoring with five points on two goals and one assist, while four other players have found the back of the net once this season. Junior keeper Kaitlyn Savage has started both contests in net and holds a 0.50 goals against average with a .889 save percentage.
Friday will mark the sixth meeting between the two programs, and the Eagles hold an all-time record of 3-1-1 against the Panthers. The Green and Blue’s home record against FIU sits at 2-1, with FGCU holding a 6-3 goal advantage at the FGCU Soccer Complex. The Eagles only loss in the series came during the 2010 season at the FGCU Soccer Complex, when the Panthers netted the golden goal in double-overtime at the 102:08 mark in a rain-filled contest.
